Ron Wenzel To Chair June 9 Middle Inlet Board Meeting

Issue Date: June 9, 2022

Former Middle Inlet Town Board Supervisor Ron Wenzel will officially take over as Town Chair at the Middle Inlet Town Board meeting starting with the Finance meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, and then moving on to the regular board meeting at 6:30 p.m.

At a special town board meeting on Wednesday, June 1 Wenzel was elected to replace Town Chair Rich Wade, who resigned his position as elected Town Chair.

At the start of the 10 a.m. meeting on June 1 Wade read his written resignation aloud, saying he was resigning for personal reasons and his last day of employment with the town would be Wednesday, June 8. Town officials present for that meeting in addition to Wade were Supervisors Donald Van and Charles (Chuck) Stanek and Clerk/Treasurer Patricia (Trish) Schutte. There were also approximately 20 members of the public on hand.

In his written statement Wade said, "after my decision to resign I contacted clerk Schutte and informed her of my decision. Next, with Schutte present, I contacted the Towns Association to get info on filling my vacancy. With conversations with Joe Ruth, Lara Carlson, and Carol Nawrocki they informed of the procedure in doing so, also reviewing state statute 17.25 with me.

"After concluding conversations with them, I called the towns legal counsel Kim Coggins, Marinette, who also confirmed the info from the WTA and is on standby during this meeting if the board needs any kind of assistance. Regarding state statute 17.25, this is one of the rare exceptions where the clerk gets to participate with the remaining two supervisors in motions and voting," Wade continued. "Because I am resigning, I cannot participate. Finally, after reading the Middle Inlet article in the Peshtigo Times about someone resigning office, I was contacted by Ron Wenzel about the vacancy.

"After my explanation, Ron Wenzel expressed interest in filling the vacancy. Therefore, I am recommending Ron Wenzel as Chairman due to his experience as a former board member, already familiar with current policies and ordinances, and the town's current infrastructure needs," Wade concluded before turning the meeting over to Schutte for the vacancy appointment.

In accord with the advice from the WTA and the Town Attorney, only Schutte, Stanek and Van were allowed to make motions or vote on them. State law provides that in the event of need to fill a vacancy on a 3-member board the clerk or clerk/treasurer is allowed to vote, even though she is not a resident of Middle Inlet.

Stanek asked if anyone in attendance was interested in the position. County Board Supervisor, John Guarisco, who chairs the 30-member County Board in addition to representing Middle Inlet as a supervisor, said he was interested, as did Ron Wenzel, who was a supervisor on the Middle Inlet Town Board until April of 2021, when he was narrowly defeated by Stanek.

Schutte asked for a motion on John Guarisco with a roll call/raised hand vote. Stanek moved to appoint Guarisco but there was no second and the motion died.

Schutte then asked for a motion on Ron Wenzel with a roll call/raised hand vote. Motion to appoint Ron Wenzel to fill the vacancy was approved, with Van and Schutte voting in favor and Stanek abstaining.

Items on the brief agenda for the town board at its June 9 meeting include the annual renewal of the alcohol license for I Don't Know Saloon, LLC, owned by Kevin and Renee Hood; approval of operator/bartender licenses; road report; treasurer's report; payment of bills; fire department report; a recap of the spring cleanup on Saturday, May 28, and an update on garbage containers, as well as town hall and cemetery reports, and updates on ordinances and problem properties.

Communications include a letter from Carrie Brazeau, who is a candidate for the Marinette County Clerk of Courts position coming up for a vote at the primary elections on Tuesday, Aug. 9 and at the fall elections in November.

There is provision for public comment at the end of the meeting.
