Kathleen Marsh's Letter to the Editor

Issue Date: June 16, 2022

Kathleen Marsh

Letter to the Editor,

Every citizen owes it to their country to watch the hearings on the January 6, 2021 Insurrection (readily available online). Right-wing media can call the hearings political theater all they want, but the Select Committee is showing beyond a reasonable doubt that January 6 was a carefully planned coup to seditiously overturn the 2020 election results. It failed only because a few courageous people in his Administration finally stood up to Donald Trump.

Furthermore, the Big Lie was also one Big Grift. Mr. Trump used it to raise hundreds of millions of dollars, duping his donors and convincing supporters to come to the Capitol to press his bogus claims to "stop the steal." There was never an Election Defense Fund, despite the campaign raising a quarter-billion dollars in donations for one. Much of that money eventually found its way into Trump family and friends pockets. Most outrageous was the $60,000 payment to Kimberly Guilfoyle, his son's fiancé for her TWO MINUTE introduction of Trump at the rally that day.

What could be more un-American than for citizens to turn away because they don't want to face the cold hard truth? True patriots would not emulate Trump's attitude as articulated by former Attorney General Bill Barr: "There was never an indication of interest in what the actual facts were." Moreover, if citizens fail to watch and learn from this, it could well become a dress rehearsal for overthrowing future legitimate elections, ultimately leading to the Second Civil War.

Speaking of war, last week Country Cousin blithely questioned President Biden's statistics regarding cause of death for American children. She called for a fact-checker as she once again chose to wrongly blame the messenger. Why would anyone write something in a newspaper thousands of people read if she has not checked its accuracy? Why should readers have to fact-check her? By the way, it took less than two minutes to verify that Biden is correct. In 2020, (the most recent year for which data is available), gun violence killed more American children aged 1 year and older than any other cause. And 2021 is on course to be even worse, with 2022 likely continue the tragic trend.

I am not anti-gun, but common sense demands asking why so many are so willing to sacrifice our babies on the Altar of the Gun. A half hour of research would show that the Second Amendment Shrine was built brick by bloody brick by Republicans to gain political power which has had disastrous and deadly consequences. That effort was funded by gun manufacturers who reap enormous earnings from selling assault rifles, high capacity magazines, and paramilitary gear. In far too many cases, those profits are paid in blood money.

Common sense also asks why anyone of any age should be able to go into a store and buy weapons of war, hundred round magazines, tactical gear, and battlefield paraphernalia. If people really want to dress and arm for battle, why not join the Military and protect the rest of us so we can live in peace?
