Menominee Goes 4-0 Over Weekend; Post 39 Drops Contest to ManitowocIssue Date: July 13, 2022 Menominee Defeats
Sault Ste. Marie
The Menominee Red Wave wrapped up a perfect 4-0 weekend with an 8-2 win over Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday.
The Red Wave took a 6-1 lead after two innings. The Soo scored one run in the first when Denvy McCord tripled and scored, but Menominee got two in the inning.
Adrian Mercier and Zach Starzynski scored runs in the first inning. In the second, Menominee blew things open. Jesse Sampson and Ethan Russell both singled and Ian Gorzinski walked to load the bases.
Wyatt Riley singled home one runner, and Adrian poked a two-RBI single. Zach made it 6-1 on a groundout to shortstop.
Mercier scored his second run in the fourth and added his third RBI in the sixth. He finished 1-1 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
Starzynski was 1-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Riley was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gorzinski scored two runs.
Starzynski threw a complete game, spreading 10 hits across six innings. He struck out three and allowed two runs.
The win was Menominee's fourth of the weekend. The Red Wave swept a doubleheader against Charlevoix and won by forfeit over Gaylord after Gaylord used an illegal pitcher.
Red Wave Sweeps
DH Over Charlevoix
Menominee swept a doubleheader in the Lower Peninsula against Charlevoix over the weekend.
The Red Wave won an 8-6 contest in extra innings in game one, while a fifth-inning barrage powered them to a 14-8 win in the second game.
Wyatt Riley, Adrian Mercier, Zach Starzynski, and Jimmy Coldren hit four straight singles to get Menominee started in the first game, and a groundout from Kennison Boivin brought in Starzynski.
Menominee led 3-2 after one inning, as Derek Hebner clubbed a two-run home run for Charlevoix to keep things tight.
Menominee scored two more in the second, with Ethan Russell walking to start the inning and coming home on an Ian Gorzinski double.
Gorzinski would score in the second and again in the fourth, trotting home on a Starzynski single.
The Patriots scored three in the fifth to tie things up at 6, and neither team would score in the final two innings. Riley reached third in the sixth after a leadoff walk but was stranded there.
In the eighth, a pair of errors by the Patriot defense helped Riley and Starzynski score, and the tying run never made it out of the on-deck circle in the Charlevoix half, with two strikeouts ending the game.
Mercier got the win. He didn't allow a run over two innings of work, striking out three. Starzynski also tossed two scoreless innings. Ethan Russell allowed six runs over four innings.
At the plate, Riley scored two runs on a 1-3 day. Starzynski was 3-4 with a walk, two runs, and two RBIs, and Gorzinski went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mercier was 2-4 with a run scored.
Despite the 14-8 final score, game two was close until the fifth inning.
After failing to score in the first three innings, Menominee broke out for five runs in the fourth, then scored nine in the fifth before the game hit its time limit with two outs and the Red Wave still rolling.
After starting the inning down 8-5, nine of the first 10 Red Wave hitters reached base, with a sacrifice bunt providing the only out.
By the time the dust had settled on the inning, Menominee had three singles, six walks, one hit batter, and one error by the opposing shortstop.
Substitute outfielder Matt Mellinger had a particularly big inning. After entering the game in the fifth, he walked and singled, scoring twice and providing two RBIs.
Riley, Russell, and Gorzinski each scored two runs in the game. Gorzinski had two RBIs and Riley had one. Gable Buck went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Starzynski got the win, allowing one run in his third of an inning. Mercier threw 3.1 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and Riley allowed two earned over 1.1 innings.
Red Wave Falls
9-5 to Braves
Gladstone clipped Menominee 9-5 with a four-run sixth inning and two home runs on Wednesday, overcoming a resilient Red Wave team.
Menominee scored three runs in the first inning. Ethan Russell walked to start the game, then scored on a double by Zachary Starzynski. Matt Mellinger slapped a two-RBI single to give the Red Wave a 3-0 lead.
Gladstone tied the game in the third a three-run home run by Drake Forrest. One inning later, it was 5-3 Gladstone after a solo blast by Aeden Creten and a run from Tyler Darmogray.
Menominee tied the game in the top of the sixth on two RBIs from Blake Borths, but the tie was short-lived, with Gladstone scoring four in the bottom half of the inning.
Menominee put the leadoff runner on in the seventh but went down in order after that.
Starzynski was 1-4 with an RBI and a run, Jimmy Coldren was 2-4 with a run scored, Borths went 1-3 with two RBIs, and Mellinger was 1-2 with two RBIs.
Marinette Legion
Falls to Manitowoc
Manitowoc's Legion baseball team came back to beat Marinette 8-5 in eight innings on Wednesday.
Marinette had the better start of the two teams, taking a 4-0 lead in the third.
After two scoreless innings on both sides, Logan Shallow doubled to get the third-inning rally going. Preston Rehwinkel scored him on a sacrifice fly two batters later. Lane Whiting doubled in Braeden McMahon and scored, along with Adam Lemery, on an Alex Rupert single.
From that point, the Marinette Legion Post 39 offense would go quiet, with no hits for the next three innings.
Manitowoc, on the other hand, started getting into its groove in the middle innings. After scoring one in the fourth, Ashton Portmann lashed a two-RBI single in the fifth to cut the Marinette lead to just one.
After An Alex Linsmeyer RBI double in the sixth, the teams were tied. Both teams put a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but neither one could bring them across.
In the eighth, Manitowoc exploded for four runs on five hits, with Portmann doubling in another two runs off Ashton Lebich to blow the game open.
Faced with a four-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth, Marinette got one back after Austin Burnside hit home Landon Beyer, but the tying run was left in the on-deck circle as Shallow grounded out to short for the final out.
Lebich took the loss. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter, but Manitowoc's five hits in the eighth resulted in four earned runs over 2.2 innings. Sean Christiansen started the game, allowing two earned (four total) on eight hits and three walks. He pitched 5.1 innings.
On the other side, Manitowoc's Brandon Stephany settled in after a rough third inning. He pitched all eight innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks. Portmann was 3-5 with four RBIs for Manitowoc.
For Marinette, Rupert was 1-4 with two RBIs. Lemery went 2-4 with a run scored and McMahon was 2-2 with a run scored. McMahon was hit by two pitches as well.
