Coleman Wins M&O Conference ChampionshipIssue Date: May 18, 2022Softball The Coleman Cougar Softball squad was the sole winner of this year's M&O conference championship trophy.
Head Coach Jean LeVash had nothing but praise for her hard-hitting girls saying, "Christina Ermis and Chloe Halford anchored the outfield while Chloe Dufeck led the infield. Those seniors had a huge impact on the youth around them. This year's team was young. We lost some experience at key positions this season. Losing senior Aubree Kreischer and Junior Rachel Terp to season-ending knee surgeries were huge losses. We had some inexperienced kids step up and contribute. This was a young energetic team with an aggressive style of baserunning. They were so much fun to coach.
When asked how her team was able to stay atop the conference this season LeVash said, "We had a lot of inexperienced players step up and contribute this season. Chloe Dufeck was able to move over to first to help strengthen our defense. Courtney DenRuyter remained strong in the pitching circle. DenRuyter's experience on Varsity last year and her tremendous work ethic helped her grow into a dominant pitcher this year. Our tough pitching and strong bats kept going this year. Offensively, we were dialed in at the plate this year. We hit the ball well and put up some big numbers against opponents this season."
Blue Devils Battle Back
in Win Over Wrightstown
Oconto scored seven unanswered runs to power back from a 4-2 deficit and beat Wrightstown 9-4 on Monday.
Down 4-3 in the top of the fourth, Juliana Sieber hit a two-run home run to give Oconto a lead. In the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils reeled off four consecutive singles to bring three runs across.
Sieber went 2-2 with a home run, two runs, and two RBIs, Addisyn Viestenz was 2-4 with a run and an RBI, and S Brill was 1-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
It was a well-balanced effort from the Blue Devils offensively, as Lauren McDowell, and Hannah Thomson each had one hit, one RBI, and one run, Kadynn Bostwick was 1-4 with an RBI, Alyse Viestenz was 1-4 with a run scored, McKenna Seidl was 1-3 with a run, and Maggie Shorweide scored a run.
Annika Schleuter pitched all seven innings and needed just 60 pitches to do so. She struck out seven and allowed four runs (one earned) on three walks and seven hits.
The Blue Devils committed three errors. Wrightstown committed five.

Night Win Over
Oconto Falls
Marinette's softball team went out with a bang on senior night, beating local rivals Oconto Falls by a 3-1 score.
Marinette scored all three of its runs in the third inning. Kaya Bodam singled to lead off the inning and stole second base, coming in on an RBI double by Cienna Grawey. Peyton Berman walked and would come around to score with Grawey to make it 3-0.
Oconto Falls' got on the board in the sixth with Sydney Bell reaching on an error and scoring on an Ashlyn Allen single.
Falls loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but a strikeout neutralized the threat. It could have brought in a run or more, but Marinette senior center fielder Kylie Sauve gunned down a runner on the basepaths for the second out.
"Our center fielder, who's a senior, made a nice play to run it down and seal it for us with a phenomenal throw. It was meant to be" Marinette coach Scott McIntyre said, describing the throw as "a dart to second base."
Wynn Erdman pitched for Marinette. She allowed five hits and one unearned run.
The Panthers put up a tough fight. Despite being just 5-16 on the year, they're better than their record shows, both head coaches agreed.
"I've got a team of nine kids and we just have to get it together. When we do by the 24th when we play our first tournament game, I have total confidence," Falls coach Jen Thompson said. "We were hitting the ball good tonight, which we haven't done the last couple of games, so that gives me some confidence in the way we were playing tonight. They played flawlessly tonight. It was awesome. It was a great game. I love playing Marinette."
Marinette is looking to make another tournament run after losing in the Division 2 state semifinals last season. Mattie Renikow a senior on that team, was in attendance to watch this year's seniors play their final regular-season home games before looking to make a run of their own.
"I've grown up playing with them, so it's just cool to see how much they've grown. Even over the last year, they've grown a lot," she said. "It's just a really sweet memory, playing with them and coming back and seeing them play on their senior night. It's almost like a deja vu. It was just really cool, and I think they've grown immensely in the last year."
Peshtigo Defeats Coleman in Defensive Battle
Peshtigo and Coleman geared up for postseason softball with a non-conference matchup on Monday, which Peshtigo won 4-0 in a game that didn't have much offensive firepower.
The two teams combined for just three hits in the game. Peshtigo scored three in the first inning, with three walks loading the bases, and an error, wild pitch, and passed ball subsequently unloading them, allowing Peshtigo to score without a hit.
Bethany Ahrens, Sydney Lund, and Akira Smalls all scored.
In the third inning, the lead stretched to 4-0 when Emma Gilligan walked and made her way around the bases courtesy of two passed balls and a wild pitch.
Allison Peters and Sam Lacoursiere had hits for Peshtigo. Ahrens walked three times in the game.
Ava Podoski had the Cougars' only hit, as Peters was nearly untouchable. She tossed seven flawless innings, allowing one hit and one walk. She struck out nine.
On the other side, Courtney Den Ruyter allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits and seven walks. She struck out seven.
Rangers Take Down Badgers
Wausaukee used a five-run fifth inning to beat Niagara 7-2 on the softball diamond Tuesday.
The game was tied 1-1 when the Wausaukee bats hung five in the fifth.
Niagara was held to two hits in the game, as Rachel Schlies went seven innings and allowed two runs to cross. She issued four walks and struck out nine Badgers.
Malory Sanicki was 1-2 with a run scored for Niagara. Josie Learned scored the other run and Beau Anderson had an RBI.
Abby Wells took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) over seven frames.
At the plate, Wausaukee's Beth Schaal and Kenzie Trusdell each went 1-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Camber Caylor scored two runs and Melody Schaal was 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
Vikings Sink Marines
in Double Header Loss
Marinette was beaten in both games of a doubleheader against Denmark last week.
The first game ended 6-3, with an early spurt putting the Vikings in the driver's seat. Three singles, an error, and a hitter batter ended in two runs in the first, and Miranda Johanek blasted a solo home run in the second.
Marinette scored one run in the first and got one back in the third, but Denmark scored two in the third off back-to-back doubles and a wild pitch. The Vikings led 5-2 after three.
Shayla Diaz singled and scored in the fourth to cut it to 5-3, but Denmark's Amber Jonek battened down the hatches and wouldn't allow a run the next three innings, inducing five groundouts, three flyouts, and one strikeout. She allowed two baserunners in the sixth but got a groundout to end the threat. She also got another insurance run in the sixth.
For Marinette,
Wynn Erdman took the loss, pitching seven runs and allowing six runs (four earned). She struck out four.
Kaya Bodem was 2-4 with a run scored and Diaz was 2-3 with a run.
The second game ended 3-1. Marinette's lone run came in the third when Alli Kacalo singled and scored. She had two hits in the game.
Kucharo threw 3.1 innings and allowed three earned on three hits and five walks. Erdman threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Wolverines Lose Close
Match With Crandon
Crandon beat Crivitz 5-3 on Monday night after scoring four runs in the first inning.
The win was a five-inning victory in which Crivitz was out-hit 3-2.
Nilea Guns took the loss, allowing four earned runs (five total) on three hits and nine walks. She struck out nine.
The Wolverines' Lexi Franzmeier was 1-2 with a run, two RBIs, and a walk.

Double Header
With Three Lakes
Crivitz took one of two from a doubleheader with Three Lakes on Saturday.
Game one didn't go the Wolverines' way, as they were held to two hits in a 3-2 extra-inning loss.
Three Lakes went up 1-0 in the fourth, but the Wolverines fired back in the top of the fifth with two runs by Jessica Gromoski and Megan Pusick.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth, Three Lakes tied things up in the sixth, and with one out in the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Jays scored to win the game.
Lexi Franzmeier was 1-4 with an RBI and Nilea Guns was 1-3.
Guns took the loss in the circle despite a fairly strong performance. She went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two walks and five hits. She struck out seven.
The Wolverine bats woke up just in time for game two, a five-inning, 10-4 win. Crivitz scored five runs in the first to jump out to a lead, adding to it with two in the third and leading 7-1. After Three Lakes scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Crivitz matched it with a trio in the top half of the following inning.
Cilena Guns was 2-2 with a run and two RBIs, Isabelle Danielczek was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, and Pusick was 1-3 with two runs scored. Rayleigh Vallier scored twice.
Pusick started in the circle and tossed three innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit and two walks, striking out four.
Danielczek entered for the fourth and got one out while allowing three runs (two earned) before Guns entered to get the final two outs of the inning.

Power Marinette
Past Clintonville
Wynn Erdman struck out 11 of the 19 batters she faced and Cienna Grawey had a monster game at the plate in a 13-0 win over Clintonville on Thursday.
The Marines' ace allowed just two hits and one walk in the game, and never let a batter past second base.
The Marines got on the board in the first inning with a Grawey solo home run. She clubbed her second home run of the game two innings later to make the game 4-0 in favor of the Marines.
She finished 2-3 with four runs scored and four RBIs. The Truckers wouldn't let her hit her third home run in the fourth, issuing her an intentional walk, but she'd still come around to score. She reached on an error and scored again in the fifth.
Alli Kacalo was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, Savannah Boivin was 2-3 with a run scored, and both K Boehm and Kylie Sauve scored twice, with the latter adding an RBI.
