Athelstane Raises Building Permit Fees, Adds New Cemetery Rules

During reports near the start of the Athelstane Town Board meeting on Tuesday, June 14, Scott Durian reported recent discussions by the Planning Commission had included a possible recommendation to set a minimum lot frontage of 150 feet on public roads.
After discussion on "keyhole lots" later in its meeting, the Town board voted without dissent to approve amending Ordinance #6: "Land Division" by changing minimum road frontage of newly created lots to 150 feet. Discussion included that "keyhole lots" are advantageous to developers because it allows them to create more lots in a given area.
By unanimous vote the board approved extending the contract with the Silver Cliff Rescue Squad from July 1, 2022 through Sept. 30, 2022 in the amount of $2,000.
There was discussion on a request for a donation to purchase school supplies for families in need. On motion of David Jose, seconded by Kelly Barnes and approved, the board agreed to donate $150 to the Wausaukee Back-To-School Program.
The Town Board meeting began with a financial session at 6:30 p.m. where bills were reviewed and approved for payment.
The regular monthly meeting was called to order by Chair Kelly Barnes at 7 p.m., with all officers present except Supervisor 1 Denis DeJardin. There were six members of the public in attendance.
During time for public comment, Peggy Johnson thanked Kelly LaCount for helping her get a turtle off the road.
Fire Chief Scott Durian reported the Fire Department had one meeting and two trainings during the past month. They had responded to a two-car accident on Mathis Road and County C, a fire at Firelane Bar and two missing persons reports. Durian reminded everyone of the Fireman's Picnic coming up on Saturday, July 9.
Durian also reported grading, patching and hauling gravel for town roads is being done, and salt will be ordered soon for next year.
Greg Reinhardt gave the Treasurer's report which showed the town had $1,552.78 in Checking, $270,819.32 in General Money Market, $170,058.51 in Tax Money Market, and $121,410.64 Local Government Investment Pool, for a total of $563,841.25.
After discussion on amending Ordinance #7, which regulates licenses, registrations and permits the board approved increasing the building permit fees, "After the Fact Permit" fees and variance fees, increasing the variance fee to $200; the building permit fee to $75, and the "After the Fact" building permit fee to $300. All voted in favor.
After discussion on what can be placed in the cemetery grounds the board unanimously adopted an amendment to "Ordinance #18 Cemetery" to add a provision that individuals shall not place any items or objects, other than those mentioned earlier in the section, in or on the cemetery grounds.
A Class A Beer license was approved for Driftwood Log Cabin; a Class A Beer & Liquor license was approved for Athelstane Country Mart & Automotive; Class B Beer & Liquor licenses were approved for Nimrod Inn, Crazy Guyz, Firelane Bar & Grill and Sally & J.C's Northwoods Bar; a Class B Beer & Class C Wine license was approved for Barrel House LLC, and Cigarette and Tobacco Products licenses were approved for Sally & J.C's Northwoods Bar and Athelstane Country Mart & Automotive.
